Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer in a recent interview commented on the fact that he passed on acquiring games like Destiny and Guitar Hero for Xbox. The CEO went on to say he’s made “some of the worst game-choice decisions” but that he ultimately has no regrets. His comments came as part of an interview at PAX West titled “Story Time with Phil Spencer,” where the head of Xbox discussed some of his favorite games from over the years, one of which is Destiny. Spencer said he has mixed emotions and stories around Destiny. The shooter didn’t initially click for him when he first played it, despite having a close relationship with developer Bungie, he said. He once shared a floor at Microsoft with Bungie founders Alex Seropian and Jason Jones and “learned a ton from just being around Bungie,” Spencer said.He said Microsoft did receive a pitch from Bungie to publish Destiny, but Xbox ultimately decided not to sign-on. It would take the game’s House of Wolves expansion for Spencer to come around on Destiny.”It’s a game that I’ll always love and a team I’ll always have a ton of affinity for,” Spencer said.Guitar Hero was another major franchise Spencer said he initially had doubt…

Content warning: This article mentions self-harm.Longtime players of EA Sports games may recall how the publisher’s famous slogan, “It’s in the game,” is actually a shortened version of the full sentiment one would hear upon booting up any of its many sports games across several decades: “If it’s in the game, it’s in the game.” This simple phrase worked well for a long time as a way to tout authenticity. If you’re seeing it on the field (or rink, court, et al), you can bet it’ll be in the video game simulation. That was the promise anyway. But it worked. The soundbyte is iconic; I can still hear it in my head even as EA dropped the first half of that slogan years ago, and today, the Madden team’s North Star is, arguably more than ever, authenticity. It’s a word that comes up constantly whenever I speak to members of the EA Orlando (formerly Tiburon) team. But this year’s NFL season is set to introduce a stark contrast between what’s in the game and what’s in the game: Guardian Caps.Invented in 2010, Guardian Caps represent the latest in player-safety equipment. These bulky, quilt-like coverings go over a player’s traditional helmet and are meant to protect…

If you’re planning to return to Azeroth when the new World of Warcraft expansion The War Within launches on August 26 (or you’ve already jumped into the early access period this week), you should consider equipping yourself with an MMO mouse. To be clear, almost every mouse will work for general MMO gameplay, and most devices marketed as “MMO mice” aren’t much different from other PC gaming models, but there’s one crucial difference: extra buttons. Lots of extra buttons, in fact. We’re talking anywhere from 10 to 20 or more additional buttons. These extra inputs usually sit on the side of the mouse for easy access with your thumb. The buttons can be mapped to the various skills and abilities you use in-game, making it easier to stay consistent with your combat rotations, pop a weave ability at the opportune moment, or even just navigate menus faster than dragging your mouse around and clicking on-screen icons.
Avowed, the Xbox console-exclusive RPG from Obsidian, will have numerous different endings that will “number in the double digits,” according to game director Carrie Patel.Patel sat down with IGN for an interview as part of Gamescom, during which she was asked how many endings players can expect from the first-person fantasy RPG.”That is very hard to say, but I can tell you our ending slides number in the double digits,” Patel said. “And you can end up with a lot of different combinations of them. This is an Obsidian game, so your ending is really the sum total of your choices across the game, across a lot of pieces of content depending on what you encountered and what you did when you found it.”What Patel describes sounds similar to endings in other RPGs like Fallout (of which Obsidian has experience working on, having developed Fallout: New Vegas), where a slideshow of different consequences play out at the end of the game showing the results of a player’s actions as they pertain to different factions, storylines, and characters.Patel further elaborated more on the choices players will be making in Avowed.”There are a lot of choices to be made about where your true loyalties lie,…
